Today is voting day in the United States. A remarkable thing happens once the votes are counted. Those with the most votes (electoral votes if we are talking about the Presidency) assume their roles and those with fewer votes give them up. No guns, no bloodshed.

Whether you agree with who is in the seats or not, it is a remarkable thing we do. The perpetuation of our system is not guaranteed. We must be informed (one reason a free press was so important to the founders) and involved. Half-truths and meaningless rhetoric won’t get us there.

To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical idea. — Thomas Jefferson
